I’m celebrating Pride 2024 with a Pride Platter inspired by the colors of the progress Pride flag. Happy Pride 2024!
The array of Pride flags joyfully represent the diversity of people in the LGBTQ+ community. Here’s a resource for the symbolism of many of the various Pride flags.
Want to make your own Pride Platter? First pick a flag. You could go with the iconic six-color rainbow flag or choose the flag that resonates with you.
List the colors of your flag. Brainstorm foods to fit each color. Take notes listing the foods you want to use for each color.
Select the platter or board you plan to use. Ensure the size of the platter will accommodate the number of stripes and types of food you intend to use.
Make a rough sketch of your board, indicating the relative position of the stripes. Finalize your list of foods for each color. Consider the orientation of the stripe pattern and the number of stripes. (I decided on a diagonal orientation for my eleven stripes.)
Guesstimate the appropriate quantity of foods you’ll need to fill the board. Shop accordingly.
Prepare the platter immediately before you plan to serve it. Be sure to allow enough time. It goes a bit slower than your typical charcuterie board given the precise placement of the stripes. Also, more stripes mean more foods and more time. (My 12 x 17 inch board took somewhere between 1 and 2 hours for prep and assembly, not including time required for any homemade ingredients.)
Take care of any prep (e.g. washing produce, slicing cheese, gathering packages, etc) before you start placing foods on the board. You may want to assemble the board on the table or surface from which you’ll be serving to avoid the need to move a fully loaded platter.
Time to assemble your Pride Platter! Use your rough sketch as a guide. Start placing ingredients along an outer edge of the platter for the first stripe. Place individual ingredients within the stripe close together to fill up the space. Continue with each successive stripe, placing foods of each stripe snugly up against the previous stripe.
Now your platter should be bursting with pride. Snap a pic and serve!
